US Vice-President Kamala Harris has been officially nominated as the Democratic candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
Harris clinched the nomination on Friday after amassing support from 2,350 delegates, surpassing the threshold needed for the nomination.
The nomination process, conducted through an online voting system known as a virtual roll call, is set to formally conclude on Monday.
However, Jaime Harrison, Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee, confirmed that Harris had already secured the necessary votes to become the party’s nominee.
Harris has announced her intention to formally accept the nomination next week once the virtual roll call is finalized. This milestone marks a historic moment, as Harris will be the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major-party ticket in the United States.
The nomination followed President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, leading to a strong endorsement from key Democratic figures, including former President Barack Obama. Biden praised Harris, saying, “One of the best decisions I made was picking Kamala as my vice president. Now that she will be our party’s nominee, I couldn’t be prouder.”
She is expected to announce her choice for a running mate on Monday.
