In a shocking development, Doyin Okupe, the director-general of the Labour Party (LP) presidential campaign council, has resigned from his position.
The letter of resignation, dated December 20, 2022, was seen by Okay.ng and confirms that Okupe’s decision comes hours after he was convicted over money laundering charges.
In the letter, Okupe explained that he had briefed Peter Obi, the LP presidential candidate, about his “personal travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same.”
He emphasized that he had invested too much in the campaign to allow his “personal travails to become a source of distraction.”
Therefore, he opted to “step aside” and requested that Obi appoint a new campaign director-general who could continue the assignment “with zero distractions.”
