The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has detained eight people in Ekiti State Command with 1,465 kg of narcotics believed to be Indian Hemp.

The agency also demolished five hectares of cannabis sativa farms in Ire Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area, Ekiti, where the psychoactive plant was grown.

Speaking to reporters following the destruction of the farm and the arrest of the planters in Ado, Ekiti, yesterday, the Deputy Commandant of the NDLEA in that state, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, claimed that his operatives had gathered intelligence that led to the arrest of the suspects.

1,465 kilograms of cannabis sativa of substance commonly known as Indian hemp was recovered during the operation, while eight suspects were arrested,” said Ibrahim, who guided NDLEA to the property.

The exhibits have been transported to the NDLEA state command headquarters in Ado Ekiti, the state’s capital.

According to him, the inquiry is still underway, and anyone is proven to be at fault will unquestionably face charges.

The Indian hemp field was more than 20 kilometers from the center of the community, hidden in the dense woodland of Ire Ekiti in the state’s Oye Local Government Area.

It was said that the NDLEA operatives found and destroyed the vast area of cannabis farmland after receiving a tip from an intelligence source. Residents of the state have recently raised alarm about the state’s rising indian hemp and other illicit substance consumption rates.
