Security operatives in Anambra State have arrested a mother and her two children for beating their 75-year-old father, identified as Romanus Obidigwe.
It was gathered that the culprits, Esther Obidigwe, Ozioma Obidigwe and Obuka Obidigwe, committed the crime in Awba-Ofemmili community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
This was disclosed in a press statement issued on Wednesday by Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, Media Assistant to the State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo.
Ikeanyionwu said they were arrested after the victim was reported to the ministry, adding that the victim suffered a series of beatings by his family members.
The statement read: “The Anambra State Government, through security operatives, arrested Esther Obidigwe, Ozioma Obidigwe and Obuka Obidigwe for beating their 75-year-old father, Romanus Obidigwe. “Sharing his experience with his family at the commissioner’s office, Obidigwe, a retired former civil servant, said his family beat him constantly.
“But what caused this particular incident is that his daughter, Ozioma, sold his firewood without his consent and when he tried to find out why she did it, they pounced on him, tied him up and used a rod to injure him.
“Obidigwe also disclosed that the trio has not fed him since, which he accepted as good luck and that they usually steal from him, especially his first son, Obuka, who had gone to the local government where he was withdrawn to seek compensation.
She pointed out that the victim regretted that he surrendered to the obligation “not to have intercourse” imposed by his wife since 2000, and that he did it for peace.
“He also noted that it took the intervention of a relative before they stopped, after which they blocked him on his property.
“During interrogations on why they caused injuries to his father, his son, Obuka, denied being present when the incident happened, while his wife, Ester, confessed to the crime, while the daughter has stated that she was the one that the father wanted to kill. In response to this situation, the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare has promised to ensure that the victim receives justice.
Therefore, Obinabo warned all members of the society to desist from crime as the present administration seeks to ensure that the oppressed get justice.
She insisted that her ministry is not only for women and children but is created for the social welfare of all.
At the time of writing, the trio have been handed over to the police where they will be questioned and charged in court.
