The National Youth Service Corps on Tuesday in Bauchi warned Batch C Stream 1, corps members against night parties and participating in local politics of their host communities.

The NYSC coordinator in Bauchi, Namadi Abubakar, gave the warning on behalf of the Director-General, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, at the close of the batch’s orientation course.

“Steer clear of acts that can put you in harm’s way, such as staying out late, attendance of night parties, visits to dangerous places, and acceptance of automobile rides from strangers,” warned Mr Abubakar.

He also advised the corps members to be security-conscious at all times as they proceeded to their places of primary assignments.

“In keeping with the objectives of the scheme, you are expected to integrate into your host communities while also appreciating and respecting their cultures. I must, however, emphasise that engagement in their local politics is a no-go-area for you,” stated Mr Abubakar. “As you proceed to your locations of primary assignments, I urge you to be security-conscious at all times.”

The NYSC coordinator added that as the corps members posting letters would be handed to them after the ceremony, they should remember the oath of allegiance they took to accept posting in good faith.

He enjoined them to perform their duties with diligence and be guided by the provisions of the NYSC Act and by-laws as well as workplace rules and regulations.

The coordinator also encouraged the corps members to build on the skills they acquired during the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme by availing themselves of the opportunities for post-camp training.

“This will go a long way in empowering you for self-employment. On our part, we are liaising with financial institutions and other stakeholders with a view to providing start-up loans to enable you to actualise your business dreams. I wish to assure you that management will continue to explore avenues for optimising the impact of the programme,’’ he said.

Mr Abubakar commended the federal, state and local governments as well as security agencies, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and all other partners for their unwavering support.

The support, he explained, had enabled the scheme to record landmark successes over the years.

One thousand and five hundred corps members were deployed to Bauchi for the 2021 Batch C, Stream 1 orientation exercises and are expected to be posted to their places of primary assignment on Tuesday.
