The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reiterated a critical warning to all travellers, emphasizing the dangers of carrying luggage that they did not personally pack or whose contents they are unaware of. This advisory aims to curb the increasing incidents of drug smuggling through unsuspecting individuals.

Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, delivered this message through his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday. He highlighted a recent case where a suspect was apprehended at an airport while attempting to smuggle narcotics concealed in a bag that was not his own.

In a video shared by Babafemi, the suspect confessed during interrogation that he did not pack the bag and had accepted it from an unknown person. “Please listen to the suspect in this video,” Babafemi urged. “He was asked if he packed the bag he was carrying, and he said no, someone gave it to him. As we always warn, never accept to carry a luggage you don’t know its contents if you’re not complicit and an accessory because #ndlea_nigeria will get you.”

Okay.ng reports that the NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts to educate the public on the risks of drug trafficking and the severe legal consequences for those caught in possession of illicit substances, whether knowingly or unknowingly.

Travellers are strongly advised to exercise caution and avoid accepting any bags or packages from strangers or acquaintances without verifying their contents. The agency’s warning serves as a reminder that ignorance is not a defense in drug-related offenses.

The NDLEA’s proactive stance is part of a broader national strategy to combat drug trafficking and safeguard Nigeria’s borders from becoming transit points for illegal drugs.

For further updates and detailed insights, watch the video below illustrating the suspect’s confession and the NDLEA’s stern warning.
