In a strong appeal to Nigeria’s military, President Bola Tinubu has urged the armed forces to escalate their fight against the country’s persistent security threats, linking national peace to democratic stability and economic prosperity, okay.ng reports.

Addressing the audience at the Nigerian Air Force’s 61st anniversary and the induction of two Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized that “a democratically stable Nigeria is fundamental to our national progress and regional peace.” He stressed the need for a “well-prepared, well-trained, and well-equipped” military to defend the nation’s democracy.

Highlighting the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the president pointed out that “peace and prosperity are key priority areas,” and that “your efforts in wrapping up our onslaught against the enemies of our collective progress are not only critical to our strategic objectives but also vital in restoring the trust and confidence of the people.”

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to modernizing the armed forces, promising continued investment in “cutting-edge defense technologies.” He described the new helicopters as a “strategic statement of intent” that will enhance Nigeria’s defense capabilities and attract investment.

The president also called for readiness to engage in peacekeeping missions beyond Nigeria’s borders, citing ongoing conflicts worldwide that affect global security. “The Nigerian Armed Forces must be prepared not only to address domestic security concerns but also to participate in regional and international peacekeeping efforts,” he said.

Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, praised the acquisition as a significant step forward, noting the helicopters’ suitability for military and civil operations, including disaster relief. He revealed the Air Force’s ongoing fleet expansion, with nine new aircraft delivered since 2024 and 49 more expected, including attack helicopters and airlift planes.

Training programs for pilots and engineers are well underway, with additional personnel receiving instruction abroad. Abubakar also highlighted local research and development efforts to boost defense self-sufficiency.

The ceremony concluded with a call for professionalism and discipline in operating the new aircraft to ensure maximum operational efficiency.
