President Bola Tinubu has affirmed that his administration inherited Nigeria on the verge of bankruptcy but has since rescued the economy through significant reforms that have stabilized the nation and restored investor confidence. Speaking at an interactive session with Nigerians in Saint Lucia, held at the Windjammer Resort in Castries, Tinubu detailed the challenges faced upon assuming office and the measures taken to reverse the economic downturn.
“We inherited a country that was near bankruptcy. But we have been able to rescue the economy. Nigeria has recovered. We have made the smuggling of our oil unattractive. We have stopped chasing forex papers at the Central Bank of Nigeria,” the President stated, as reported by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu acknowledged that while Nigeria’s per capita income remains low, his government is committed to policies fostering inclusive growth and long-term stability. Addressing Nigerian professionals in the diaspora, he assured, “Our government will not abandon you. But you must work hard. It is our job to help you succeed.”
The meeting, organized by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa, was the second in two days, following a gathering at the Saint Lucia Prime Minister’s residence. Dabiri-Erewa praised Nigerians’ contributions to Saint Lucia and encouraged maintaining strong connections with Nigeria.
Concerns raised by diaspora members included the high cost of work permits, with President of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, Smart Duah, highlighting the $2,500 annual fee as burdensome. Tinubu responded that diplomatic steps are underway to address this issue.
Medical professionals in attendance, such as Dr. Olugbemisola Ogunlusi, expressed gratitude for Tinubu’s visit, noting the positive impact on the Nigerian community abroad. Father Festus Iwuagwu remarked on the large turnout as a sign of respect for the President.
Tinubu urged Nigerians abroad to continue projecting a positive image and abide by laws, recalling his own student days in the United States to emphasize the importance of hard work and consistency. The community presented the President with a custom portrait as a token of appreciation.
Okay.ng reports that these engagements reflect the administration’s efforts to strengthen ties with Nigerians overseas while reinforcing economic recovery at home.
