President Bola Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), one of Nigeria’s highest national honours, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a bilateral meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
The meeting, part of Modi’s state visit to Nigeria, aimed to strengthen the longstanding relationship between the two nations.
Speaking during the event, Tinubu praised India’s commitment to democratic values and acknowledged Modi’s leadership achievements.
“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries,” Tinubu said.
“You represent a very strong commitment in democratic values and norms. Winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much.”
Tinubu emphasized the significance of the honour, stating, “I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s National Honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger. This is to signify Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner.”
