Niger State Governor Declares State of Emergency in Minna Over Thuggery

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has declared a state of emergency over insecurity in the state capital, Minna, following a resurgence of violent activities by thugs. The announcement was made during a Sallah Durba festival organized by former governor Babangida Aliyu.

In response to the recent violent incidents, Governor Bago directed security personnel to shoot at sight any thug threatening the peace within the state. This decision follows the death of two individuals and several injuries resulting from clashes between rival groups on Friday night in Minna.

The governor emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards insecurity and thuggery, stating that artisan miners, who are believed to contribute to the unrest, will also face severe consequences.

The resurgence of violent activities has disrupted the annual traditional Sallah Durba festival in Minna, prompting residents to rely on alternative celebrations organized by individuals like Babangida Aliyu.

Chanchaga Local Government Chairman Aminu Ladan attributed the recent crisis to the activities of miners but confirmed that normalcy has been restored in affected areas.

Former Governor Babangida Aliyu expressed support for the governor’s measures to address the insecurity, emphasizing the need to deal decisively with criminals and their sponsors.
