The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has announced a temporary disruption affecting SIM-related services across all mobile networks nationwide. This interruption comes as mobile network operators transition to a new identity verification platform mandated by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

In an official statement, ALTON explained that the migration process, which is critical for real-time identity verification during SIM registration, replacement, and Mobile Number Portability (MNP), has encountered unforeseen technical challenges. These issues have led to a temporary halt in services including SIM swap, SIM replacement, and activation of new subscribers.

“The new platform is intended to enhance the integrity and efficiency of identity management in Nigeria,” ALTON said, “but unfortunately, the transition has temporarily impacted the ability of MNOs to deliver seamless SIM-related services.”

ALTON reassured the public that its member companies are working closely with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other relevant authorities to resolve the integration issues as quickly as possible. The association also apologized for the inconvenience caused to millions of subscribers who rely on these services for communication, business, and daily activities.

Subscribers have been advised to postpone visits to service centers for SIM-related transactions until further notice. ALTON pledged to provide timely updates and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering secure, reliable, and high-quality telecommunications services to all Nigerians.

“We appreciate the patience, understanding, and continued support of the Nigerian public during this period,” the statement concluded.

As Nigeria navigates this technical transition, the telecommunications industry remains focused on improving identity verification processes to safeguard users and enhance service delivery in the long term.
