An improvised explosive device (IED) suspected to have been planted by IPOB/ESN operatives detonated at Eke Ubaheze Market in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State, resulting in the tragic death of six people and injuries to several others. The explosion occurred when a middle-aged woman, Ngozi Umeh, unknowingly stepped on the landmine, triggering the blast that caused panic and fear across Ubaheze and neighboring communities.

Okay.ng reports that multiple sources within the village have confirmed the fatalities and injuries following the incident, which took place on June 24, 2025, at approximately 14:30 hours. Ngozi Umeh was critically injured by the explosion and later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Five other victims sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Following the distress call, Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma promptly deployed operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Tactical Teams, and personnel from Orsu and Orlu Divisions to secure the area. The teams evacuated victims and conducted a thorough sweep of the market vicinity to detect and neutralize any additional explosive devices.

The police have declared the area safe, with normal activities resuming under heightened security surveillance. The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) has been directed to lead a comprehensive probe to identify and apprehend those responsible.

The Commissioner of Police extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also assured residents of Orsu LGA and the wider Imo State that the police remain committed to eradicating criminal elements threatening peace in the region. Residents have been urged to remain calm and continue their daily activities with confidence in the security measures now in place.
