The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State chapter, has called for the unconditional release of some of its members who were kidnapped in different parts of the state.

NMA said the kidnap of Doctor Alex Akani of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital is one too many.

Akani, a consultant family physician, was abducted by unknown gunmen who stormed his resident at Rumuekini community in Obio-Akpor Local Government area last Friday.

Speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt, the association’s spokesperson, Doctor Justice Ohaka, also noted that Doctor Bobmanuel Clark who was kidnapped on 23rd was yet to regain his freedom.

He also said one Doctor Obolomini was kidnapped alongside his nurses in Degema as well as Doctor Florence Onua who was shot dead around D-Line axis.

”We provide essential services and we do not expect that we should be victims of attacks from the people we provide these services to.

”Worse still, the government and security operatives have refused to come to our aid,” Ohaka said.

He complained that the frequent attacks on medical practitioners by criminals were having a negative impact on the efficiency of healthcare delivery in the state.
