His Eminence Muhammad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has officially declared the sighting of the crescent moon, signaling the start of Ramadan fasting for Muslims across Nigeria.

In a nationwide broadcast on Sunday, Sultan Abubakar confirmed that Monday, March 11, 2024, marks the first day of Ramadan 1445 after hijra, following the sighting of the moon on the 29th day of Sha’aban 1445 after hijra.

Addressing the Muslim faithful, Sultan Abubakar stated, “Today, Sunday, the 29th day of Sha’aban 1445 after the hijra which is equivalent to 10th March 2024, marks the end of Sha’aban 1445 after hijrah, with the reports of moon sightings that we have received from Muslim leaders and organisations across the country which we duly accepted.”

He continued, “Consequently, tomorrow, Monday, 11th of March, 2024, becomes the first day of Ramadan 1445 after hijra. We, therefore, call on Muslims in the country to commence fasting accordingly. We call on all Muslims to use the glorious month of Ramadan to pray for the country.”

The announcement comes after Sultan Abubakar had urged Muslims on Friday to be vigilant in observing the sky for the new moon, anticipating the start of Ramadan.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is considered a period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community for Muslims worldwide. It is a time for spiritual growth, self-discipline, and increased devotion to Allah.

Muslims are encouraged to engage in acts of charity, self-reflection, and strengthen their bond with family and community during this sacred month.
