Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly pledged Moscow’s support to Iran in response to recent airstrikes carried out on Iranian soil by the United States and Israel. The attacks, which have escalated tensions in the Middle East, were strongly condemned by Putin during a high-level meeting in Moscow on Monday.

Meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Putin described the strikes as “absolutely unprovoked aggression against Iran,” signaling Russia’s firm stance against the military actions. “We have had long, good and reliable relations with Iran. From our side, we will undertake efforts to support the Iranian people,” Putin stated, according to a Kremlin release.

Okay.ng reports that while Putin did not specify the exact nature of Russia’s assistance, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later clarified that the form of support would depend on Iran’s specific requests and needs. Peskov also revealed that Russia is prepared to act as a mediator to help de-escalate the growing conflict in the region.

The deepening alliance between Russia and Iran has been marked by increasing military cooperation in recent years. Tehran has supplied Moscow with drones used in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and both countries maintain close coordination on various regional and international issues.

In addition to his meeting with Iran’s foreign minister, Putin also engaged in talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani to discuss the broader crisis engulfing the Middle East. The recent airstrikes have heightened tensions across the region, prompting international concern over potential wider conflict.

This development underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, with Russia positioning itself as a key ally of Iran amid escalating hostilities involving the US and Israel.
