The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 745 senior police officers to different ranks at the end of its 18th plenary meeting.
The meeting, which took place in Abuja on Tuesday, was presided over by Clara Ogunbiyi, the acting chairperson of PSC.
According to Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC spokesperson, two deputy superintendents of police (DSP) were promoted to superintendents of police, 696 assistant superintendents of police were promoted to deputy superintendents of police, and 47 inspectors of police were promoted to unconfirmed assistant superintendents of police.
Ani also revealed that the commission had approved the demotion of four police officers and had issued severe reprimands to six others. He provided the names of some of the newly promoted officers, including Yusuf S. Bello and Titus Ogboku Obaji.
“The commission approved the proper placement and adjustment of promotion dates of CP Njoku Henry Eronini, CP Afolabi Babatola Adeniyi and CP Taiwo Olusola Jesubiyi in the CP staff list from 24/03/2022 to 09/03/2022 so as to maintain seniority in the force,” Ani said.
He added that the commission had also adjusted the promotion date of CP Ogundele Ayodeji to 03/06/2021 instead of 09/03/2022. The confirmation date of DCP Nwonyi Polycap Emeka was also adjusted to 07/12/2018 instead of 29/09/2020.
In addition, the commission reinstated six officers, retired two in public interest, promoted one officer (DCP Emmanuel Eze) to the rank of chief superintendent of police and subsequently retired him. The punishment of Inspector Falade Kayode, who had been reduced in rank, was reviewed, and he was exonerated and restored to the rank of assistant superintendent of police 1.
The 745 newly promoted officers will take up their new roles immediately, according to the PSC.
The commission also stated that the promotions were in line with its mandate to ensure that the Nigeria Police Force has a corps of professional, disciplined, and well-motivated personnel who are committed to the service of the nation.
