Cole Palmer delivered a standout performance, scoring two penalties to inspire Chelsea to a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory against Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League clash at the London Stadium on Sunday.
The thrilling London derby saw Tottenham collapse after a strong start, allowing Chelsea to overturn a two-goal deficit and secure all three points.
Tottenham capitalised on early Chelsea defensive errors to establish a commanding lead. Dominic Solanke struck first in the fifth minute, pouncing on a slip by Marc Cucurella to slot the ball into the net. Six minutes later, Dejan Kulusevski doubled the advantage, squeezing a shot past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez after another error by Cucurella.
Chelsea halved the deficit through Jadon Sancho, who fired a low shot from the edge of the box to make it 2-1 before halftime. Both sides had opportunities to score, but Tottenham maintained their slim lead heading into the break.
In the second half, Chelsea’s resurgence began when Yves Bissouma fouled Moises Caicedo in the box, leading to a penalty converted with composure by Palmer in the 61st minute to level the score.
Chelsea then took the lead with a thunderous volley from Enzo Fernandez after Palmer’s involvement in the build-up. Palmer sealed the victory with a stunning Panenka penalty in the 84th minute, setting a Premier League record by maintaining a perfect conversion rate with all 12 penalties scored, surpassing Yaya Toure’s 11 successful attempts.
Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son scored a late consolation goal in the sixth minute of added time, but Chelsea held firm to secure the win.
The victory moves Enzo Maresca’s side to second place in the Premier League table with 31 points from 15 matches, reducing Liverpool’s lead at the top to four points, though Chelsea has played one game more.
Other Matches Earlier in the day, Alex Iwobi played the full 90 minutes as Fulham held his former club, Arsenal, to a 1-1 draw, denting the Gunners’ title hopes. Arsenal remain third, six points behind Liverpool with a game in hand.
At the Amex Stadium, Wilfred Ndidi featured for 52 minutes as Leicester City staged a late comeback to draw 2-2 against Brighton, securing a crucial point in their fight for European qualification.
