Nigeria and Tanzania are advancing plans to launch direct flights between the two nations. Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, recently engaged in crucial discussions with Judica Nagunwa, Head of Chancery of the Tanzania High Commission, solidifying the commitment to strengthen bilateral relations.

The meeting, held in Abuja, centered on Air Tanzania’s formal request to initiate direct flights between the East African nation and Nigeria. Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to Minister Keyamo, conveyed the essence of the discussions in a statement, highlighting the Tanzanian envoy’s dedication to bolstering air connectivity.

“During the meeting, the Tanzanian envoy conveyed the High Commission’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Tanzania, particularly in the area of air connectivity,” Moshood stated. “A key point of discussion was the request by Air Tanzania to commence direct flights between Tanzania and Nigeria.”

Nagunwa emphasized the multifaceted benefits of this initiative, noting that “the launch of direct flights would not only enhance trade and tourism between both countries but would also deepen cultural and people-to-people ties.” This sentiment underscores the broader implications of improved air connectivity, extending beyond mere economic gains to fostering stronger interpersonal connections.

Minister Keyamo responded positively, assuring the Tanzanian delegation of the ministry’s support. He pledged to facilitate the necessary processes, aligning with Nigeria’s bilateral agreements and regulatory standards. “He reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to expand Nigeria’s aviation frontiers and promote stronger air transport linkages across Africa,” Moshood explained.

This initiative represents a significant step towards realizing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) goals, promoting intra-African trade, and enhancing regional integration. The establishment of direct flights can reduce travel time and costs, making it more accessible for businesses and tourists to explore opportunities in both countries.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to ongoing engagement, aimed at expediting approvals and finalizing operational plans. This collaborative approach signals a strong desire to swiftly translate discussions into tangible action. The establishment of this route could provide a significant boost to both economies.
