The newly inaugurated Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Motomori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, has vowed to ensure strict adherence to court orders, declaring that obedience to judicial rulings will not be negotiable during her tenure.

The CJN made this statement on Monday in Abuja during the commencement of the 2024/2025 legal year and the inauguration of 87 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs).

Speaking at the Supreme Court, Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasized that no individual or institution, regardless of their status, will be allowed to treat court judgments with disregard. She asserted the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the sanctity of judicial decisions.

“Disobedience to court orders or non-compliance with judicial directives is a direct affront to democracy and an invitation to anarchy,” she stated, adding that respecting the features of democracy is essential to maintaining societal balance.

The CJN also highlighted the need for collaboration within the justice system, urging all stakeholders to work collectively in safeguarding citizens’ rights and upholding democratic practices.

Justice Kekere-Ekun acknowledged the negative image that has plagued the judiciary over the years, attributing it to various factors, including the behavior of some individuals within the justice sector. She promised to work diligently to change this perception and restore public confidence in the judiciary.

Condemning the practice of forum shopping by some lawyers, which has led to conflicting court orders, the CJN warned that such indiscretion would not be tolerated under her leadership and that consequences would follow any actions that bring the judiciary into disrepute.
