Kingsley Moghalu, a former presidential candidate and member of The Patriots group, has expressed disagreement with President Bola Tinubu’s response to calls for urgent constitutional reform. Moghalu argued that economic transformation is intrinsically linked to constitutional reform and emphasized the importance of a new constitution anchored on real federalism.
Moghalu stated that it would be almost impossible to bring a fundamental fix to Nigeria’s economy without a new constitution. He warned of the potential consequences of delaying constitutional reform, citing historical examples and emphasizing the need for nationhood for economic success.
The Patriots group, led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku, had met with President Tinubu to advocate for a new constitution. While Tinubu received the delegation respectfully, he emphasized that economic reform is currently his priority.
Moghalu urged President Tinubu to reconsider the importance of constitutional reform, stating that Nigeria’s direction appears rudderless without a purposeful destiny. He reiterated his concerns about Nigeria’s direction, citing his 2018 book “Build, Innovate and Grow (BIG)”.
