Mauricio Pochettino Departs Chelsea After One Season by Mutual Consent

Mauricio Pochettino has parted ways with Chelsea after just one season at the helm, the club announced on Tuesday.

Despite a strong finish to the season, the Blues ended their campaign in sixth place in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League qualification and failing to secure a trophy.

In a statement, Chelsea FC confirmed the departure: “Chelsea FC can confirm that the club and Mauricio Pochettino have mutually agreed to part ways.”

Pochettino’s tenure at Chelsea was marked by significant investment in new talent. Under the ownership of an American consortium led by LA Dodgers co-owner Todd Boehly and private equity group Clearlake Capital, Chelsea spent over £1 billion ($1.3 billion) on new players over two years. Despite this, the team struggled with consistency, which Pochettino attributed to a lack of experience and a lengthy injury list.

The Blues faced setbacks in cup competitions, losing the League Cup final 1-0 to Liverpool after extra-time and falling to Manchester City by the same scoreline in the FA Cup semi-finals. However, there were glimpses of promise towards the end of the season, with Chelsea securing five consecutive wins to ensure European competition next season. They will qualify for the Europa League if Manchester United lose to City in the FA Cup final, or the Conference League if United pull off an upset against the English champions.

Pochettino expressed his gratitude in his departure statement: “Thank you to the Chelsea ownership group and sporting directors for the opportunity to be part of this football club’s history. The club is now well positioned to keep moving forward in the Premier League and Europe in the years to come.”

Chelsea’s sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, also extended their appreciation: “On behalf of everyone at Chelsea, we would like to express our gratitude to Mauricio for his service this season. He will be welcome back to Stamford Bridge any time and we wish him all the very best in his future coaching career.”
