The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has touched down in Benue State, responding swiftly to a recent surge of violent attacks that have claimed numerous lives. In a decisive move, the IGP has commanded the immediate deployment of additional tactical police teams to the troubled region to restore peace and security.

In a succinct statement released on Monday via the official Nigeria Police Force X (formerly Twitter) handle, the force confirmed the development: “IGP arrives Benue, orders for additional deployment of tactical teams.”

This deployment follows a brutal two-day killing spree in Guma Local Government Area, where official figures confirm at least 45 fatalities. However, local leaders suggest the death toll could be far higher, with some estimates exceeding 200. Disturbing reports indicate that entire families were burned alive during the attacks, and security personnel were among those killed.

The situation has sparked widespread outrage on social media and among civil society groups, who are urging the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Benue. Many Nigerians have expressed frustration over what they perceive as the government’s delayed response, especially when contrasted with the rapid declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State earlier this year amid political unrest, despite no reported casualties then.

As the IGP takes charge on the ground, the deployment of tactical teams aims to curb further violence and reassure the public of the police’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property in Benue State.
