The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has resumed the collation of results for the Adamawa governorship supplementary election.

This is following the halt of the exercise on Sunday, after Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the resident electoral commissioner, declared Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the election without collating all the results.

Mele Lamido, the returning officer of the governorship election, is present at the collation centre in Yola, the Adamawa state capital, alongside Festus Okoye, the INEC national commissioner and chairman of the voter education and information committee.

The Electoral Act 2022 mandates the returning officer with the responsibility of declaring a winner in an election.

Therefore, Yunusa-Ari’s declaration of Dahiru as the winner of the election without collating all the results was a violation of the electoral laws.
