In a grim development on Saturday, five security operatives from Katsina State’s local community security outfit were killed in an ambush by armed bandits in Maharba village, Matazu Local Government Area.

The attackers, estimated at around 20 and riding motorcycles, struck near a riverbank after the security team responded to a distress call about bandit presence.

According to eyewitnesses, the bandits lay in wait among the trees and opened fire on the operatives, subsequently setting their Hilux van on fire. All five men inside the vehicle were killed, including Mallam Sanusi, the unit commander overseeing security in Kusada, Kankia, and parts of Charanchi.

Governor Dikko Radda promptly led a delegation of top security officials to the site, including Dr. Nasiru Muazu, Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs; the State Commissioner of Police; the DSS Director; and the Governor’s Chief of Staff, Alhaji Abdulkadir Nasir. They were received by the local government chairman, Alhaji Shamsudeen Sayaya.

The governor inspected the burnt vehicle and toured the surrounding difficult-to-access areas to better understand the security situation. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies and community leaders to safeguard lives and property, stating, “The sacrifice of these brave men will not be in vain.”

Commissioner Mu’azu acknowledged the challenges but pointed to ongoing military operations, especially in Ruwan Godiya, as signs of progress. The governor’s visit was part of a comprehensive security review, with residents encouraged to remain patient and supportive.

This attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in Katsina’s rural areas, where banditry continues to threaten peace despite government efforts.
