A midnight inferno has razed down twenty shops and destroyed properties worth millions of Naira in Katsina Central market.

The shops affected were located at the western gate of the market popularly referred to as the temporary area.

It was gathered that the fire incidence destroyed items that included jewelleries, bale of clothes and handsets believed to be worth hundreds of million of Naira.

It reportedly lasted for about three hours before being put off by combined efforts of men of the state fire service and security personnel.

An eyewitness said “the incidence started from one shop at the centre before escalating to adjourning shops” noting that “it was caused by power surge”.

One of the shop owners, Muhammadu Yusuf, who trades in gold said he lost items worth over sixty million.

“I am at a dilemma now as my customers just brought their golden bracelets for me to repairt few hours before this incidence” he said even as he joined other traders to appeal for support and assistance from government.

Our correspondent reports that similar incidence occured in 2012 when an early morning inferno razed shop at the Western gate of the market.
