The Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has reported a fatal motorcycle accident and a serious pedestrian injury caused by reckless tricycle driving in Ibadan. According to OYRTMA Chairman, Major Adekoya Adesagba, the fatal crash involved a TVS motorcycle with registration number LUY 306 UT at Agbarigo, Mokola, resulting in one death and two injuries.
Separately, on Thursday morning near a petrol station in Ibadan, a tricycle rider violated traffic laws by driving against the one-way traffic, striking a pedestrian, Oladayo Adisa, who sustained severe facial injuries. “Mr Adisa was caught off guard and sustained severe injuries due to the carelessness of the tricycle rider,” Adesagba said.
OYRTMA operatives were on site promptly to rescue victims and transport them to the Oyo State Hospital at Ring Road, Ibadan. The agency also recovered personal belongings from the accident victims, including a bag with a large sum of money, which was returned to the family.
Adesagba condemned the rising trend of one-way violations, calling it a dangerous menace to public safety. He urged strict compliance with traffic laws, warning that the government will not tolerate reckless behavior. “We will continue to enforce traffic regulations rigorously to ensure the safety of all road users,” he added.
Eyewitnesses noted the tricycle rider showed no remorse and claimed inability to assist the injured pedestrian financially. However, the prompt intervention of OYRTMA officers and a petrol station manager ensured the victim received urgent medical care.
Adisa, upon regaining consciousness, praised the swift response and urged that violators caught driving one-way should be prosecuted. Adesagba also commended the Oyo State government’s commitment to road safety and called for public cooperation to prevent further tragedies. “Together, through shared responsibility and collaboration, we can make our roads safer for all,” he said.
