The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may have beamed its searchlight on the immediate past comptroller-general of the Nigerian Customs Service, Abdullahi Dikko.

Dikko voluntarily retired from his position as the comptroller-general of the customs service in August 2015, saying he needed to give younger people a chance to run the agency. President Muhammadu Buhari accepted his resignation on August 14, 2015 after some delay and wished him well in his future endeavours.

On Friday, EFCC operatives stormed the Abuja residence of the former Customs boss in two Toyota buses with registration numbers RSH 555 ABJ, and BWA 645 GA. An operational van of the Nigerian Customs Service on guard duty to the resident was sighted a few meters away from the besieged residence.

The residence was soon surrounded by security operatives comprising armed riot policemen attached to the EFCC and gun wielding plain-clothes operatives. Some of the armed operatives took positions at the gate of Dikko’s residence while their counterparts were observed discussing in groups.

It was gathered that the operatives were acting on an intelligence report to conduct the search on the residence for the former CG. It could not however be immediately confirmed whether Dikko was in the residence on not.

The circumstances behind the EFCC investigation are not yet clear but it will be recalled that a few weeks ago, online newspaper, The Cable published a troubling report of covert investigation by one of its reporters into the corruption within the Nigerian Customs Service.
