Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has achieved a significant milestone by climbing four places to be ranked the eighth-best team in the world, according to the latest rankings released by the Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) on Thursday.
This remarkable rise in the rankings is attributed to D’Tigress’ outstanding performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Under the guidance of coach Rena Wakama, the African champions delivered a series of impressive victories, defeating top-ranked teams Australia and Canada during the group stages.
D’Tigress made history by becoming the first African team, male or female, to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympic basketball tournament.
Although their journey ended with a valiant effort against the reigning champions, the United States, in the last-eight, their performance solidified their status as one of the top teams in the world.
