Nigerian comedians Ayo Makun (AY) and Basketmouth have opened up about the toll their 18-year rift has taken on their careers and relationships within the entertainment industry.

The duo, who had been embroiled in a longstanding feud since 2006, recently made a public appearance together on the latest episode of AY’s podcast, The Glass House.

During the podcast, AY reflected on the origins and impact of the prolonged dispute, admitting that he never fully understood how the feud began.

“I didn’t know when the fight started. I just noticed it started,” AY shared.

“Every day I wake up thinking boys will be boys, and like that, it grows into several years. People were spreading more rumors about it till it lasted that long.”

AY emphasized that their unresolved issues created barriers, particularly for people dependent on them within the industry.

“Our feud caused some damages because, in a way, we were like providers for people,” he said, acknowledging the ripple effects of their discord.

Basketmouth also spoke on how the feud created an environment where others felt compelled to “swear allegiance” to one of them.

He recalled an incident where a fellow comedian sought his permission to work with AY.

“I told him it was okay, and I was happy it happened because people would know it was okay to work for either of us,” Basketmouth said. “It was about more money and opportunities.”

The comedian also noted how the feud influenced others in the industry to take sides. “There was a guy that picked a side and came at me. Now that we are cool, he would be confused. It is a collaboration over competition.”
