Nigerian actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot has publicly dismissed allegations about his sexuality, stating that claims suggesting he is gay are “irrelevant” and “baseless.”
The allegations surfaced after a controversial blog post named several Nigerian celebrities, including actors and reality TV stars, as identifying as gay, sparking widespread debate on social media.
In an interview with TVC, Elliot, who has maintained a low profile regarding the controversy, clarified his stance on the rumors, asserting his heterosexuality.
“Why would I respond to allegations made against me when it did not reduce or increase my life?” Elliot questioned, adding that he did not see the need to defend himself against “opinions being conceived.”
The politician emphasized his commitment to personal authenticity while respecting others’ rights to identify as they choose, provided it aligns with the law.
“If you feel you identify as something, as long as it is within the law. People do not have to accept it, do you,” he said, underscoring his belief in individual freedom.
Elliot went on to reinforce his heterosexual identity, saying, “So let me say right here, I am straight. You can never have anyone straighter than me.”
He further expressed his disinterest in engaging with sensational claims, encouraging those seeking publicity to do so responsibly.
“If some people want to enjoy themselves through publicity, that is left to them, but I do not care really. Do you and enjoy yourself, but do it within the law and with respect to your neighbours.”
