In response to a widely shared video that allegedly depicts members of the Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad using harsh measures against suspected touts, the state government has mandated a full investigation into the matter. The video reportedly shows the squad, known locally as “ndi Akodo,” engaging in what some viewers have described as brutal treatment of individuals in Onitsha, the state’s commercial nerve center.

Despite the government’s firm stance against touting, authorities have stressed the importance of ensuring that law enforcement personnel act within the bounds of legality and human rights. Dr. Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, representing the state government, urged the public to exercise caution when consuming and sharing media content. “In this era of AI and sophisticated disinformation, we urge members of the public to always verify media contents before spreading or holding same as true,” he said.

Dr. Mefor highlighted the administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding citizens’ rights, stating, “The Soludo administration is committed to upholding the rights and dignity of every lawful citizen and resident of Anambra and will not allow any person or group to infringe, or inflict pains unduly upon lawful citizens.”

The government assured the populace that maintaining peace and order will be balanced with principles of justice and respect for human dignity. The anti-touting squad’s activities have been under scrutiny for some time, with residents expressing mixed feelings about their methods and impact on public safety.
