The Anambra State Police Command has launched an aggressive operation to suppress unlawful gatherings across the state, targeting the escalating rivalry among cult groups. Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, issued a directive on Monday, emphasizing the urgency of curbing cult-related violence, especially following intelligence reports about a planned meeting and initiation by the Neo-Black Movement of Africa.

According to a statement from the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police have reinforced their presence in student-dominated areas through the deployment of the School Protection Squad. This move, Orutugu explained, is a proactive measure to prevent disruptions and potential reprisals among rival cult factions.

The police chief has also called on hotel and bar owners, as well as operators of lounges and studio apartments, to refuse their premises for any gatherings linked to cult activities. “This follows the security intelligence-led policing and community information that suggests that the Neo-Black Movement of Africa may use today 7th of July 2025 to execute plans that could lead to serious public disorder, including cult initiations and reprisals against rival cult groups in the State,” the statement noted.

The command’s strategy includes covert surveillance at motor parks and other identified hotspots, aiming to prevent any untoward incidents before they escalate. The School Protection Squad, an initiative of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is central to these efforts, focusing on safeguarding students and educational infrastructure.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious gatherings or activities to the authorities. “Given the above, the Command urges the public to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activities, gatherings, or threats to the Police as the Command remains dedicated to a peaceful and secure environment for everyone in the State,” Ikenga added.

Contact details for area commanders and divisional police officers have been made available for prompt communication. okay.ng reports.
