Nigeria’s national electricity grid has suffered its 12th collapse in 2024, plunging multiple regions into darkness and highlighting the persistent challenges in the country’s power infrastructure.

The latest grid failure occurred on Wednesday at approximately 2:09 pm, as confirmed by the official handle of Nigeria’s National Grid.

Jos Electricity Distribution Company (Jos Disco) provided a slightly different timestamp, noting the collapse around 1:33 pm, which resulted in widespread power outages across its service areas.

Dr. Friday Elijah, Head of Corporate Communications at Jos Disco, assured customers that restoration efforts are currently underway.

“We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy,” he stated.

This incident marks a troubling milestone, as the national grid has now collapsed 12 times in 2024, with 11 of those occurrences happening between January and November.

The repeated failures raise serious questions about the stability and reliability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.

The grid’s handler acknowledged the major setback through an official communication, simply stating, “A major grid setback has occurred, and the restoration is to commence.”

As Nigerians continue to grapple with frequent power interruptions, the recurring grid collapses underscore the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and investments in the country’s electricity sector.
