Chad’s military leader, Mahamat Deby Itno, has been declared the winner of the country’s presidential election.

The Chadian National Election Management Agency announced that Déby won the May 6 election with an overwhelming 61% of the votes cast.

His main opponent, Succès Masra, the incumbent prime minister, received 18.5% of the votes.

The election result solidifies Déby’s hold on power in the country, which he has ruled since 2021, following the death of his father, Idriss Déby, who was the former president.

The election was widely seen as a test of democracy in Chad, and Déby’s victory is expected to be met with both support and opposition from different factions in the country.
