Nigerians are committed to making the world a better place with their ingenuity.
Nigeria is often accused of borrowing and improving on other countries’ technology, inventions, dances, food etc. Although we often see room for improvement in other people’s inventions, we also do some major inventing ourselves.
Btw, it is only out of the goodness of our hearts that we improve on things. Here are 5 awesome things invented by Nigerians:
1.Shoki
Our world famous Shoki was invented by street boys in Agege, Lagos. This dance was popularized by Lil Kesh and Orezi’s Shoki songs.
2. Generator powered by Water
This was invented by Emeka Nelson. A generator that runs on water could be the solution to Nigeria’s fuel and power issues. When the now defunct bank PHB said “one day, cars will run on water”, I bet they weren’t envisioning this massive leap forward.
3. Afrobeats Genre of Music
Anytime you dance to Naija music, you are invariably paying homage to the creator of the Afrobeats genre of music, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Almost every Nigerian song contains a hint of this wonderful genre.
4. Hospital in a Box
This great invention that is saving lives was invented by our very own, Seyi Oyesola. It is a completely mobile hospital powered by solar panels which can fit two doctors. It comes equipped with anaesthetic and surgical equipment.
5.Zeer (Pot-in-Pot Refrigerator)
Mohammed Bah Abbah is credited with inventing this amazing and cheap way of refrigerating perishable items. The Zeer is made up of a small pot inside a bigger pot with the prevailing vacuum filled with moist sand and covered with a cloth. As the sand dries,
The Zeer is made up of a small pot inside a bigger pot with the prevailing vacuum filled with moist sand and covered with a cloth. As the sand dries, it carries away the heat from the smaller pot.
Ingenious right?!
Mohammed Abbah is the recipient of a $75,000 Rolex Award for Enterprise which he used to produce and distribute his invention in 11 Northern states in Nigeria.
