26-year-old wins constituency seat in Kwara State

A 26 year old Journalist, Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Owode/Onire State Constituency Election in Asa local government area of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria has been declared the winner of the State Assembly elections held on Saturday, March 18 by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).

Rukayat Shittu polled 7,521 to defeat the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP), Abdullah Magaji, who polled 6,957.

Speaking with VON Correspondent after being declared the winner, Rukayat said she felt privileged to be pronounced winner of the election in Owode Onire constituency and appreciated her party, leaders of the party and voters for giving her what she described as a rear opportunity.

“Youth and women are being sidelined in Nigerian politics but Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq has shaped the face in Kwara. I will make sure I improve and encourage youth and women participation in the polity”, she declared.

The newly elected Lawmaker was a Journalist and Head of the News Department, Just Event Online publication.

She resigned from her position to contest in the 2023 State House of Assembly election, marking the start of her political career.

Rukayat Shittu, who is still single, said she plans to marry very soon.
