In a historic inauguration held on May 16, 2025, Princess Opeyemi Bright was sworn in as the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom, representing the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham at just 29 years old, okay.ng reports.

This achievement marks a significant moment for Nigerian diaspora representation and youth leadership in British politics.

Bright, born in the UK to Nigerian parents, has been a prominent figure in local politics since her election as a councillor at 22. Her tenure has been marked by a passionate commitment to youth empowerment, social inclusion, and fostering economic growth within her community. “This is nothing short of God’s grace,” she stated during her inauguration. “I’m proud to serve my borough, and as a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence. May this journey inspire others to lead, serve, and rise.”

Her family legacy includes her mother, Dr. Councillor Afolasade Bright, who served as Civic Mayor of Hackney, and her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright MBE, a senior minister, underscoring a foundation of public service and faith.

Princess Bright’s election is part of a larger pattern of Nigerians excelling in political leadership abroad, joining ranks with prominent figures such as Kemi Badenoch, Labour’s Chi Onwurah, and diaspora politicians in Canada and the US. Her success challenges youth disengagement stereotypes and highlights the critical role of women and immigrants in leadership roles.

Her rise also presents an opportunity for Nigerian leaders to capitalize on diaspora expertise and leadership to drive national development, emphasizing policies that support youth and diaspora engagement.
