Erica Morales, 36, never got to hold her newborns before she passed away shortly after having a caesarean.

It is not yet known what caused her death but it is believed to be linked to complications during surgery.

The infants, who only weigh 2lbs each, will stay in the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Arizona for the next two months until they get stronger.

Her and her husband Carlos had tried for years to conceive so were overjoyed when they found out they were expecting not one, but four babies.

Now he is left to bring up the newborns, three girls and one boy, alone friends have set up a memorial fund to provide for them on website Go Fund Me.

Nicole Todman, who has known Erica since childhood, wrote on the page: “Erica’s passing is traumatic and my goal is to help ease the financial worry as much as possible so every dollar helps.

“It will all be used to provide for the beautiful babies Erica fought so hard to have and in the end gave her life for.”

Already the site has received more than $20,000 (£13,000) in just two days.

Before the pregnancy the couple had been trying to have a baby for two years.

Friends said Erica had tried everything to conceive from acupuncture to fertility treatments.

Tragically she also suffered a miscarriage before finally becoming pregnant last June.
