Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) commuting between the Central Area and the Airport are set to experience improved transportation options as the FCT Administration (FCTA) has completed the rehabilitation of the Abuja Metro Rail Line.

The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, announced the readiness of the Abuja light rail for commercial operations on Monday following a final inspection of the project. Wike expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that the facilities are in place and meet the expectations set by President Bola Tinubu. Upon assuming office, Tinubu had tasked Wike with ensuring the rail line was operational within his first year in office.

Wike highlighted that the rail line would offer an alternative transportation route from the Central Business District, through various communities along Airport Road, to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. He emphasized the significance of the rail line in easing the daily commute for FCT residents.

“We are ready, and you can see the facilities,” Wike said. “Just that we identified one or two things that were omitted during the design, but we believe that during full operations, some of these things will be taken into consideration.”

Wike mentioned that the design overlooked some comfort features such as air conditioners in waiting areas and elevators at certain stations to assist elderly passengers or those with mobility issues. Despite these omissions, he assured that they would not hinder the rail line’s operation and could be addressed during regular service.

“Apart from that, I think we are happy with the work that has been done and we believe that Nigerians will be happy, particularly the residents of FCT,” he added.

The minister also pointed out that ensuring access roads to the train stations is crucial for the metro line’s functionality. Without these roads, community members would struggle to reach the stations, undermining the rail line’s purpose.

Regarding the rehabilitation costs, Wike disclosed that the project amounted to not less than $15 million, approximately N10 billion.
