Messaging platform WhatsApp has officially ended support for several smartphones running outdated operating systems, Okay.ng reports.

Effective from June 1, 2025, users with older iPhones and Android phones will no longer be able to use the app unless they update their devices to meet the new system requirements. The development is part of WhatsApp’s efforts to improve overall security and performance.

To continue using WhatsApp, iPhones must now be running iOS 15.1 or later, while Android devices must be on Android 5.1 or above. As a result, popular models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S4, and Sony Xperia Z1 have lost access to the app.

Users of iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and the first-generation iPhone SE can still access WhatsApp, but only if their devices are updated to iOS 15.8.4. Those unable to meet these requirements have been advised to back up their chat history and migrate to newer devices to avoid service disruption.

The update is in line with Meta’s strategy to eliminate support for legacy software in order to maintain the integrity and performance of WhatsApp across modern devices.
