Global streaming giant Netflix has debunked claims that it is exiting Nigeria, emphasizing its continued investment in Nigerian stories and the local film industry.

The statement comes in response to remarks made by Kunle Afolayan, a prominent Nigerian filmmaker, during the 2024 Zuma Film Festival in Abuja.

Afolayan alleged that Netflix had quietly pulled out of Nigeria, halting the commissioning of new Nigerian originals.

He noted that while his hit series ‘Anikulapo’ secured a third season before the supposed decision, other Nollywood projects in development were canceled.

Afolayan described the alleged move as a significant blow to the Nigerian film industry but also a wake-up call for stakeholders to rethink strategies for growth and sustainability.

However, Netflix dismissed the rumors, reassuring its commitment to the Nigerian market.

“We are not exiting Nigeria. We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories to delight our members,” a spokesperson for Netflix stated.

Netflix has played a crucial role in elevating Nollywood productions to a global audience by curating a diverse array of local content, ranging from romantic comedies to thought-provoking dramas.

The platform has also collaborated with Nigerian filmmakers, funding original productions that have garnered international acclaim.
