The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a startling discovery involving drug trafficking through traditional Nigerian attire.

Officials uncovered cocaine hidden inside ‘aso-ebi’ male caps known as ‘fila’ and female headgears called ‘gele.’ This innovative smuggling method was revealed by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday.

Babafemi cautioned the public, stating, “In case you’re asked to help take as part of your luggage to Europe or elsewhere any aso ebi fila and gele (traditional male cap and female headgear), the latest seizure of cocaine concealed in such materials uncovered by #ndlea_nigeria will make you think twice.” Alongside his warning, he shared photos and video footage of the seized items, highlighting the sophistication of the concealment.

This seizure adds to a growing list of creative drug trafficking attempts thwarted by the agency.

Last week, okay.ng reported that NDLEA officers discovered a large hidden compartment in the belly of an oil tanker, designed explicitly for moving drugs across Nigeria.

The NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks, urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when asked to transport traditional clothing items abroad.
