The United States government, via its Trade Representative (USTR), has expressed strong disapproval of Nigeria’s extensive ban on 25 categories of imported goods, labeling the policy as harmful to American exporters and an unfair trade practice, okay.ng reports.

In a recent report outlining what it considers the top 10 trade barriers faced by U.S. companies worldwide, the USTR specifically called out Nigeria’s import restrictions. The report identifies these bans as a major impediment to accessing the Nigerian market and ensuring fair trade.

The prohibited items include significant American exports such as beef, pork, poultry, fruit juices, medications, and alcoholic beverages. The USTR cautioned that these prohibitions are not only limiting access to Nigeria’s expanding consumer base but are also reducing potential earnings for U.S. producers.

This criticism from Washington occurs at a time of increasing global trade friction, with the U.S. itself facing scrutiny for its imposition of tariffs on various nations.
