Updated: Ex-Benue Governor Gabriel Suswam Declares Bid for PDP National Chairmanship

Dr. Gabriel Torwua Suswam, former Governor of Benue State, has officially announced his candidacy for the national chairmanship of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Suswam made his intentions known during meetings with the Benue State Working Committee (SWC) of the PDP and the caucus in Benue North East Senatorial District, held separately in Makurdi and Katsina Ala.

Asserting his qualifications for the role, Suswam emphasized his leadership capabilities and commitment to rebuilding the PDP. He cited the party’s tradition, indicating that he is the rightful successor to Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the immediate past national chairman, also from Benue State.

Addressing party members, Suswam urged unity and cooperation, emphasizing the importance of setting aside differences to strengthen the PDP.

The former governor’s bid comes after Ayu’s suspension by the PDP in his ward in 2023, leading to his removal as national chairman. Currently, Alhaji Umar Ililya Damagum serves as the acting National Chairman of the PDP.

Suswam, a seasoned politician and lawyer, has a long history with the PDP, having served as a House of Representatives member and governor. Despite losing his Senate re-election bid in 2023, Suswam remains a prominent figure within the party.

The meeting in Katsina Ala, attended by key PDP stakeholders including Mrs. Margaret Icheen, Hon. Titus Uba, and party officials from the North Central zone, signifies widespread support for Suswam’s candidacy.
