Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05 have completed the signing of central defender Moussa Niakhatéon from FC Metz on a 5-year contract. The 22-year-old left-footed defender made 38 appearances for the French club last season.

“Moussa Niakhaté has been on the club’s radar for a while now, not least due to his impressive performances for the France youth teams. He is a well-developed player with good attributes and a physical playing style. After Abdou Diallo, he becomes the next France U21s international in our defence who can play as both a central defender and full back. He is a unique and good character, who will integrate very quickly here. We’re convinced that he will find his way in the Bundesliga,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder.

“During our discussions, Sandro Schwarz and Rouven Schröder convinved convinced me of the project here at Mainz. I want to continue developing here and help the team  have a good season, for both the club and the fans,” said Moussa Niakhaté.
