A boat accident occurred on the Kwalgai River in Jigawa State’s Auyo Local Government Area on Sunday evening, resulting in the death of one person and leaving one other missing. However, 18 passengers were rescued alive.

According to the Jigawa State Police Command, the incident happened around 10:00 pm when a canoe carrying about 20 marketers from Kwalgwai village capsized due to powerful waves and overloading. Prompt action from divers, fishermen, and good Samaritans, along with a team of policemen, led to the rescue of 18 passengers.

Unfortunately, one of the missing females, 18-year-old Habiba Ado from Kwalgwai, was found dead at Auyo hospital. The police have attributed the accident to powerful waves and overloading, which made it difficult for the driver to steer the canoe.

The authorities have urged residents and travelers to exercise caution and avoid overloading canoes, especially during adverse weather conditions, to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Search and rescue efforts for the remaining missing passenger are ongoing.
