President Bola Tinubu has posthumously conferred the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) award on Taoreed Lagbaja, the late Chief of Army Staff, during a solemn funeral ceremony held at the National Cemetery in Mogadishu, Abuja, on Friday.

In his tribute, Tinubu described the late COAS as a trusted advisor and a selfless leader who prioritized the nation’s welfare and the well-being of his subordinates.

“Throughout his military career, his legacy of service will be cherished forever,” Tinubu said.

“As an eternal symbol of our appreciation, I’ve granted late Chief of Army Staff the posthumous national honor of Commander of the Federal Republic,” the President added, calling Lagbaja one of his “best appointments.”

While mourning Lagbaja’s loss, Tinubu called for rededication to the principles and patriotism the late general embodied.

“For his courage, sacrifice, and leadership, General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja will forever reside in the pantheon of military greats,” he stated.

“He displayed uncommon valor in securing and defending our country, its people, and their hard-won constitutional democracy.”

Tinubu also praised Lagbaja’s commitment to the welfare of military personnel and their families, underscoring his pivotal role in maintaining the operational efficiency of the armed forces.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, also paid tribute to Lagbaja, pledging that the armed forces would use his death as renewed resolve to defeat the enemies of the state.

“His tenure was marked by decisive actions against insurgency, banditry, and other threats to our nation’s peace,” Musa said.

“His efforts significantly enhanced the operational readiness and morale of the Nigerian Army.”

Describing Lagbaja as a leader of integrity, purpose, and compassion, Musa added, “He was a devoted family man, a mentor to many, and a friend to all who crossed his path.”
