President Bola Tinubu has directed the Nigeria Police Force to safeguard local government secretariats in Rivers State following reports of arson and vandalism by hoodlums aggrieved with the outcome of Saturday’s local government elections.

In a statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, presidential spokesman, Tinubu expressed deep concern over the violence, which saw several council secretariats in the state set ablaze.

“In response to recent tensions following last Saturday’s local government council election, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state,” Onanuga said.

The President called on all political actors to de-escalate tensions and urge their supporters to refrain from violence and destructive acts. He stressed the importance of maintaining peace, law, and order in the state.

Tinubu instructed law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in restoring peace and protecting public institutions, stating that facilities built with public funds must not be destroyed.

“President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately. He emphasised the need to ensure the security of public institutions,” the statement read.

The President condemned the use of self-help, noting that democratic processes, including the judiciary, provide a legal pathway for resolving political disputes.

Tinubu further reminded the public that Nigeria has enjoyed 25 years of continuous democracy and urged political actors to respect the rule of law.
