President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, describing the late head of the Catholic Church as a humble servant of God and a tireless advocate for the poor and marginalized.

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, following a prolonged battle with bilateral pneumonia.

In a heartfelt statement released on Monday, President Tinubu joined Catholic faithful and Christians around the world in mourning the pontiff’s passing, while also reflecting on the profound impact of his leadership.

“Today, with a heavy heart, I join the Catholic faithful and Christians worldwide in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a guiding light for millions,” Tinubu said.

“His passing, coming just after the celebration of Christ’s resurrection, is a sacred return to his Maker at a time of renewed hope for Christians.”

Okay.ng reports that President Tinubu praised Pope Francis for his unwavering commitment to justice, compassion, and environmental stewardship, noting how the pontiff’s voice echoed for those in need across the globe.

“He challenged the powerful to act with justice and reminded us that our common home — this Earth — is a gift we must protect for future generations.”

“He was a steadfast advocate for the developing world, where he consistently spoke against economic injustice and ceaselessly prayed for peace and stability in troubled regions.”

President Tinubu urged Nigerians and the global community to not only mourn the pontiff but to carry on his legacy through acts of compassion and service.

“As we mourn the late Pontiff, let us also celebrate his legacy. Let us honour him not with words alone but with action: by lifting those who are down, healing our communities, and defending the dignity of every person.”

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, became the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013 at the age of 76, becoming the first Jesuit pope and the first from the Global South.
