The Lagos State Government has disclosed that the repairs of the Third Mainland Bridge by the Federal Ministry of Works will enter a new phase with the partial closure of the Iyana Oworonshoki-Adeniji Adele bound section.

The closure is part of the ongoing rehabilitation efforts that commenced in November 2023, initially focusing on fixing the ramps.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, emphasized that the closure is necessary for the effective repair of the entire section of the bridge.

He provided details of the traffic management plan to ease the burden on commuters during this period.

The schedule for the partial closure is as follows:

  • From 12 am to 12 noon, the bridge will be open for Mainland Inbound Island travels.
  • From 12 noon to midnight, the bridge will be accessible from the Island to the Mainland.

Motorists traveling in the opposite direction during these respective time frames are advised to use the alternative route via Eko Bridge.

The timing of the closure aims to match peak traffic periods and reduce travel stress. Osiyemi urged the public to cooperate with traffic management officials and thanked them for their understanding and cooperation.

The Federal Government had earlier announced its plan to close a section of the Third Mainland Bridge in two phases, with each phase lasting six weeks.

The first phase, which commences on January 9, 2024, focuses on the Lagos Island-bound carriageway of the bridge. The subsequent phase will address the Adeniji-Adele to Iyana Oworosonki end.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the closure, including Ojota-Ikorodu Road-Funsho Williams Avenue-Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS, Ojota-Ikorodu Road-Jibowu-Yaba-Oyingbo-Iddo-Carter Bridge-CMS, and Gbagada-Anthony-Ikorodu Road-Funsho Williams-Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS.

The Third Mainland Bridge, stretching 11.8 km, is undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation, marking another phase in its history of periodic repairs.
